Different musical trajectories brought together in the same space, open to unexpected affinities, frictions and crossings.

DOUBLE BILL brings together artists, generations, scenes, languages and geographies without forcing them into a single frame. Two sets, two distinct configurations, sharing a space in which new connections can emerge.

The artists

For its first edition, DOUBLE BILL brings together two ensembles rooted in composition, improvisation and experimental practice.

Tim Berne

Alto saxophonist and composer whose highly individual language continually brings composition and improvisation into contact. His projects include Bloodcount, Big Satan, Science Friction and Snakeoil.

Fabrizio Spera

Drummer and organizer with a long-standing presence in experimental and improvised music, and a founding member of ensembles including Ossatura and Roots Magic.

Ermanno Baron

Drummer working across jazz and contemporary electro-acoustic improvisation; he founded ACRE, an ensemble devoted to electro-acoustic improvisation.

Rob Mazurek

Cornetist, composer and multidisciplinary artist whose work spans electro-acoustic composition, improvisation, performance and visual art. His projects include Chicago Underground, São Paulo Underground and the Exploding Star Orchestra.

Giancarlo Schiaffini

Composer, trombonist and tubist, active at the intersection of jazz, improvisation and contemporary music since the 1960s, and one of the key figures in Italy’s early free-jazz scene.

Gianni Trovalusci

Flutist and performer working across contemporary music, improvisation and experimental performance, whose practice spans new music, extended techniques and collective forms.

Radical Chimeras – Rome

Mazurek is in Rome for a period of research and production at CONTACT Art Project Space, where he is developing Radical Chimeras – Rome.

On October 10 and 11, the project will open to the public with an open studio at CONTACT as part of Romadiffusa Esquilino 2026 / Open Galleries, followed by the exhibition opening on October 13. The concert offers another perspective on a practice in which sound and visual art have long developed side by side.

On Friday, October 9, Flaming Creatures and Folderol present the first edition of DOUBLE BILL – Encounters Across Lines, a new concert format that brings different musical trajectories together and opens them to unexpected affinities, frictions and crossings across generations, scenes, languages and geographies.

The inaugural edition brings together Tim Berne feat. Fabrizio Spera & Ermanno Baron and Radical Chimera Trio (Rome): Rob Mazurek, Giancarlo Schiaffini and Gianni Trovalusci.

Alto saxophonist and composer Tim Berne has developed a highly individual musical language in which composition and improvisation continually intersect. After studying with Julius Hemphill in the 1970s, Berne went on to build an extensive body of work with ensembles including Bloodcount, Big Satan, Science Friction and Snakeoil, collaborating over the years with musicians such as Nels Cline, Marc Ducret, Tom Rainey, Craig Taborn and David Torn.

In Rome he will perform with drummers Fabrizio Spera and Ermanno Baron. Spera has long been active in experimental and improvised music, both as a musician and an organizer, and is a founding member of ensembles including Ossatura and Roots Magic. His collaborations include Wadada Leo Smith, Evan Parker and John Butcher. Baron works across jazz and contemporary electro-acoustic improvisation; he founded ACRE, an ensemble devoted to electro-acoustic improvisation, and has taken part in a wide range of projects on the Italian experimental and jazz scenes.

Radical Chimera Trio (Rome) is a new formation created specifically for this encounter, bringing together Rob Mazurek, Giancarlo Schiaffini and Gianni Trovalusci.

Cornetist, composer and multidisciplinary artist Rob Mazurek has spent more than three decades working across electro-acoustic composition, improvisation, performance, painting, sculpture, video and installation. His musical projects include Chicago Underground, São Paulo Underground and the Exploding Star Orchestra, alongside a wide-ranging network of collaborations in experimental music and the visual arts.

Composer, trombonist and tubist Giancarlo Schiaffini has been active at the intersection of jazz, improvisation and contemporary music since the 1960s, and was one of the key figures in Italy’s early free-jazz scene. He studied at the Darmstadt Summer Courses with Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti and Vinko Globokar, worked with Franco Evangelisti and the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, and has been a member of the Italian Instabile Orchestra.

Flutist and performer Gianni Trovalusci works across contemporary music, improvisation and experimental performance. After graduating in flute from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, he specialized in contemporary repertoire with Pierre-Yves Artaud in Paris and in historical performance practice at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. His collaborations include Roscoe Mitchell, Hamid Drake, Ken Vandermark, Evan Parker and John Tilbury, as well as numerous ensembles devoted to contemporary and improvised music. He is president of the Fondazione Isabella Scelsi.
